Gran Turismo 4 Recompiled
Gran Turismo 4 is the first game brought up by PS2 Web Recomp, which translates the Emotion Engine's code into C++ ahead of time, compiles it to WebAssembly and draws with WebGPU. The project is In Progress. A separate matching decompilation, gt4-decomp, rebuilds the engine's source code and reports 82.9% code matched.
How to play
- Make a disc image of your own Gran Turismo 4 disc. The project ships no game code or data.
- On Linux x86-64, install git, CMake, Ninja, a C++20 compiler and Python 3, then clone PS2 Web Recomp from its GitHub page.
- Run the repository's port script with your disc image. It translates the game's executable to C++ and builds a local web page and a native runner.
- Serve the page with the included server script and open it in a browser with WebGPU, or start the native runner in a window.
Game version you need
- Disc image of your own copy; the README names no required region
Hardware & system
- Browser with WebGPU (Chrome or Edge on Windows/macOS; flags needed on Linux)
- To build: git, CMake, Ninja, a C++20 compiler, Python 3

About the game
Gran Turismo 4 is a racing video game, and the fourth installment in the Gran Turismo series. It is also the final game to support the Sony PlayStation 2. Gran Turismo 4 is one of only four titles for the PlayStation 2 that is capable of 1080i output. GT4 was delayed for over a year and a half by Polyphony Digital, and had its online mode removed. The game features over 700 cars from 80 manufacturers. The game also features 51 tracks, many of which are new or modified versions of old Gran Turismo favorites, with some notable real-world additions.

About this project
The PS2 Web Recomp README documents how the first race ran at 3 frames per second with a software rasterizer, and how moving the Graphics Synthesizer to WebGPU compute shaders and compiling the vector-unit programs ahead of time raised the frame rate. God of War II later went through the same scripts. The page uses SharedArrayBuffer, so it must be served cross-origin isolated, which the included server script does; saves go to a memory card kept in the browser's storage.
gt4-decomp is a separate project: a matching decompilation of the engine for the NTSC-U v1.01 release, SCUS-97328. It rebuilds readable source that compiles to the original binary rather than producing a ready-made port, and its progress figure is read from the objdiff report the project publishes.
FAQ
Can Gran Turismo 4 run in a browser?
Yes, through PS2 Web Recomp, which is In Progress. The page is built on your machine from your own disc image and needs WebGPU: Chrome or Edge on Windows and macOS, or Chrome on Linux with WebGPU flags turned on.
Is there a native PC version of Gran Turismo 4?
PS2 Web Recomp also builds a native runner that plays in a window on Linux. Separately, gt4-decomp is a matching decompilation of the engine at 82.9% code matched; it rebuilds source code rather than producing a port.
Is the Gran Turismo 4 recomp an emulator?
Not for the main CPU: the game's Emotion Engine code is translated ahead of time into C++ and never interpreted. The runtime answers the PS2 operating system, sound and some hardware with high-level emulation, as the README describes.
Does Recompedia provide the game, ROM or BIOS?
No. Recompedia does not host or link to ROMs, ISOs, BIOS files or game assets. PS2 Web Recomp ships no game code or data either; it needs a disc image made from a copy of the game you own.
