god-of-war-recomp translates the NTSC-U executable of God of War into C++ with PS2Recomp and compiles it into a native Windows program. Since October 2026 it builds on the runtime of Waffle565's native port. The project is In Progress: it reaches the menus, a new game and the ship fight, while 60 fps is still being worked on.

How to play

  1. Make an image of your own NTSC-U God of War disc (SCUS-97399). The repository contains no game files and none of the code generated from them.
  2. On Windows, install the build tools listed in the README; the repository's scripts set up the rest of the pipeline.
  3. Extract the game files from your disc image with the included extractor, then run the build scripts to recompile SCUS_973.99 and compile the native executable.
  4. Start the executable. It reads the extracted disc files directly rather than the ISO.

About the game

God of War cover art

God of War is an action-adventure hack-and-slash video game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). Initially launched for the PlayStation 2, the game stands as the first instalment in the God of War series and the third in chronological order. Loosely inspired by Greek mythology, it unfolds in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central theme. The player takes on the role of Kratos, the protagonist, a Spartan warrior devoted to the Olympian gods. Tasked by the goddess Athena, Kratos is assigned to eliminate Ares, the God of War and Kratos' former mentor. Ares had deceitfully manipulated Kratos into killing his wife and daughter. As Ares attacks Athens fueled by hatred for Athena, Kratos embarks on a quest to locate Pandora's Box, the sole object capable of permanently stopping the vengeful god.

Story (via IGDB, in English)

Kratos is a warrior who serves the Greek gods of Olympus. Flashbacks reveal that he was once a successful captain in the Spartan army and led his men to several victories before being defeated by a barbarian king. Facing death, Kratos called on the God of War, Ares, whom he promised to serve if the god would spare his men and provide the power to destroy their enemies. Ares agreed and bonded the Blades of Chaos, a pair of chained blades forged in the depths of Tartarus, to his new servant. Kratos, equipped with the blades, then decapitated the barbarian king.[23] Kratos waged war at the behest of Ares, eventually leading an attack on a village occupied by worshipers of Athena. Ares had secretly transported Kratos' wife and child to the village; during his frenzied attack on its temple, Kratos accidentally killed them. Although Ares believed this act would free Kratos to become the perfect warrior, the Spartan instead renounced his pledge of servitude to the god. The oracle of the destroyed village cursed Kratos by bonding the ashes of his dead family to his skin, turning it ash-white and earning him the nickname, "Ghost of Sparta". Plagued by nightmares of his horrible deed, Kratos vowed to serve the other gods in hope of ridding himself of the visions.

About this project

Every piece of PS2 hardware the game uses is replaced with native code: the game code is recompiled to C++, the vector-unit microprograms are compiled ahead of time, sound runs on a native engine driven by the game's own calls, and the disc is read from extracted files. The README lists boot, menus, a new game and the ship fight with HUD as working, at exact game speed.

Open work includes reaching 60 fps in heavy scenes and an intermittent hang of the window thread, while the game keeps running. PAL languages are on hold. Waffle565's God of War Native Port, a separate repository, provides the runtime this project now builds on.

FAQ

Is God of War playable on PC through the recomp?

The project is In Progress. Per its README it boots and reaches gameplay through the opening ship fight on Windows, but it is not finished: performance in heavy scenes and a window-thread hang are still open.

Which God of War disc does the recomp need?

The NTSC-U release, SCUS-97399. Other regions are not listed as supported, and PAL languages are on hold.

Is God of War II recompiled too?

God of War II is a separate project. It runs through PS2 Web Recomp, in the browser and as a native Linux runner, and is listed on the PlayStation 2 page.

Does Recompedia provide the game, ROM or BIOS?

No. Recompedia does not host or link to ROMs, ISOs, BIOS files or game assets. god-of-war-recomp ships no game code or data either; it needs a disc image made from a copy of the game you own.
