N64 Recomp ROMs: Why Exact Versions Matter

Why a ROM's revision matters

An N64 recomp is built around a particular retail executable. A different region or revision can move code and data, so a project may reject an otherwise legitimate cartridge dump. Checking the exact version before building saves time and avoids mistaking an unsupported ROM for a broken port.

This is not the same as downloading a patched game. The projects listed here ship their own code and tools; players supply a dump from a game copy they own. Recompedia does not provide or link to ROMs.

Some ports accept only one release

Starfox64Recomp is the strict example: its README says it accepts only the North American 1.1 (Rev A) version of Star Fox 64. A Japan or Europe dump, or a different US revision, is not supported. The program can load the game's assets from that matching copy after you select it.

Zelda64Recompiled likewise asks for the North American Majora's Mask version. Its README says the assets load from the supplied copy, so a separate extraction step is not needed. The project's GPU requirement is Direct3D 12 Shader Model 6, Vulkan 1.2 or Metal Argument Buffers Tier 2.

Other projects document several revisions

Banjo-Kazooie decompilation lists four supported inputs: US v1.0, US v1.1, Japan and PAL. The README gives a separate SHA-1 for each and uses the US v1.0 image as the default filename, baserom.us.v10.z64. A different version is selected by using its documented name.

Conker BFD Reloaded requires the US cartridge image and publishes its SHA-1, 4cbadd3c4e0729dec46af64ad018050eada4f47a. Its launcher remembers the ROM after the first selection, and its settings offer Classic or Modern mode.

Check the project, not just the game title

A matching game name is not enough: revision and region can be decisive. Before setting up any N64 recomp, read the project's own compatibility notes and compare the dump against its checksums where provided. The N64 recomp list links each entry to its repository and records the supported version on the game page.
