Sonic Mania Decompilation can be built for Android using its RSDKv5 engine dependency. It requires assets from a supported official release that you own, plus the documented GL shaders. The current v1.1.1 release has desktop packages; Android is a source-build workflow rather than a supplied APK.

How to build it

  1. Obtain supported Sonic Mania or Mania Plus data from a copy you own. The Netflix Games version is unsupported.
  2. Clone Sonic-Mania-Decompilation recursively so the RSDKv5 engine and other submodules are present.
  3. Follow RSDKv5 dependencies/android/README.md: install libogg and libtheora, point the Game symlink at the Mania repository, then open the Android project in Android Studio and install the NDK.
  4. Build the app, supply your game data and install the GL shaders using the project FAQ. Missing shaders can cause a black screen or crash.

Game version you need

  • Assets from an owned supported official Sonic Mania (Plus) release; Netflix Games data is not supported.

Hardware & system

  • Android Studio and NDK for a source build
  • Recursive clone with RSDKv5 dependencies; libogg and libtheora
  • Install GL shaders as documented to avoid a black screen or crash

Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platformer that pays homage to the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. Story (via IGDB, in English)

After the events of a previous adventure, Sonic and Tails detect a powerful energy signal on Angel Island and fly out to investigate. Dr. Eggman's elite robots, the EggRobos, reach the source first, a magical gemstone called the Phantom Ruby, and are transformed by its power into the Hard-Boiled Heavies. The gem warps Sonic, Tails, and the island's guardian Knuckles across familiar territories as they race to stop Eggman from harnessing the ruby's reality-bending abilities. With the Hard-Boiled Heavies pursuing their own ambitions and Eggman scheming to use the Phantom Ruby to retake control of Little Planet, the trio must chase the doctor through zone after zone before his plans can be realized.

About this project

The official project reconstructs Sonic Mania game logic and builds it with RSDKv5 or RSDKv5U. Its README explicitly links the Android build guide; v1.1.1 fixes gameplay inaccuracies including Special Ring rotation, Blue Spheres crashes and character behavior.

The release API lists Linux and Windows archives for v1.1.1, published November 1, 2025, with no Android APK. Android support is documented through source compilation, not inferred from an unrelated binary.

The project excludes Netflix Games data. Mobile touch controls are available through the example mod linked in its README; do not assume the build is the official mobile release.

FAQ

Where is the Android APK?

The checked v1.1.1 release does not include one. Follow the documented RSDKv5 Android source-build workflow.

Are shaders optional?

No for this Android setup: the RSDKv5 guide warns that missing GL shaders may produce a black screen or crash.

Does Recompedia provide the game or its assets?

No. Recompedia does not host or link to game assets. Supply the required data from a legally obtained copy of the game; the project download does not replace that copy.
